Named after Princess Margaret, this charming green island covers an area of almost 100 hectares and offers a wide range of attractions for visitors. Excavations on the island unearthed inscribed stones and Roman coins from the 2nd century and some of the reasons Margaret Island is so popular today with tourists are the hot spring water that comes up from the ground, the shade of 200-year-old trees, the former home of the princess, the ruins of a Dominican convent and St Michael’s Chapel. The Water Tower, built in 1911, rises high above the old trees, a lovely Japanese Garden where plant-lined paths lead to the cascading waterfall, and Hungary’s largest musical fountain with a central jet of water shooting up to a height of more than 25 meters. Every hour during the season, a musical program is played, and in the evenings it’s accompanied by laser projection on the water canvas created by the fountain.
Apart from a couple of spa hotels, being fed from the warm thermal waters on the Island, there are no buildings on the island – it’s a massive recreational area with promenades, benches, riding paths, a jogging track, and even a petting zoo. Margaret Island is an especially lovely place to visit during the spring and summer in Budapest.
The island is located between the banks of the Danube River, separating Pest and Buda, and is an amazing green spot with picturesque views and lovely gardens. The flowers in full bloom give the landscape vivid color shades, making for a leisurely pastoral and romantic touring experience among the many tourist attractions dotting the path.
