Don’t miss out on the incredible panoramic view of both parts of the city – Buda and Pest

The Citadella is a fortress located at one of the highest points of Budapest, upon the top of Gellért Hill. With some of the best overlooking views of the city, no wonder the Citadella is on every list of top five must-see tourist attractions in Budapest.

The fortress was built in 1851 and occupies almost the entire 235 meters high plateau. It has a U-shaped configuration and had a complement of sixty cannons. During the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Soviet troops occupied the Citadella and fired down into the city during the assault on the anti Soviet-backed government.

The Citadella on Gellert Hill is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Budapest

Nowadays, as a top tourist sightseeing attraction, the Citadella provides a superb panoramic view of the city and its bridges as well as a prime spot for fantastic pictures of the Parliament and even the Buda Castle.

Tip – after sunset, when the city lights illuminate the historical buildings simultaneously, the sight revealed is spectacular.

About the location of the Citadella

The Citadella dominates the landscape of Gellért Hill and besides being famous for its phenomenal view over the Danube and the eight bridges crossing it’s also the grounds for the Liberty Statue (or Freedom Statue). This imposing tall statue of a woman holding a palm leaf in her hand can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and is a central feature of the Hungarian capital.
