One of the most popular sightseeing attractions in Budapest and a must-visit site

Located on a hill above the Danube, the Castle District area overlooks the city and boasts amazing views and some of the best photo spots in Budapest.

Buda Castle (Királyi Palota in Hungarian) is a World Heritage site found within the Castle District, a charming and historical part of Budapest with quaint roads and classically renovated buildings. Destroyed by fire during World War II, this renowned 13th-century palace was rebuilt to reflect its past glory and is today considered to be one of the most outstanding buildings in Europe.

The grounds surrounding the royal Buda Castle, with their stunning panoramic scenery and unique natural landscape, are reminiscent of the height of the Austro-Hungarian empire period and the aristocratic lifestyle led by its rulers.

As one of the most recognizable symbols and best-known images of Budapest, a tour to Buda Castle, also known as the Royal Palace as it was previously where Kings lived, and its lovely surrounding narrow streets and alleyways, is not to be missed!

Some the best photo spots in Budapest are on this tour route!

Beside the palace lies Matthias Church with its seven towers, a historical church which is not only still having active services today, but also hosted many prominent events attended by the royal family and was the place where the coronation of the emperor Franz Josef was held in 1867.

Another not-to-miss spot for amazing instagrammable opportunities is the Fisherman’s Bastion which is also located in the Castle District. This neo-gothic and neo-classical styles bastion is rumored to have inspired the Walt Disney logo. A truly remarkable spot for taking amazing panoramic photos and selfies in Budapest.

About the location of Buda Castle

Buda Castle is located on the southern tip of Castle Hill in Budapest’s I. district. The hill reaches a height of 175 meters (574 ft) and is home to the Castle Quarter, which is an area contained within the defensive walls and bastions of the Buda Castle complex, which includes Matthias Church, and the oldest part of Budapest – tracing its roots back to 1247, when the first fort on Caste Hill built as a response to the Mongol invasion of Hungary in 1242.

With time, the settlement was fortified with defensive walls and the neighborhood grew with Hungarians and Germans, leading to the first royal palace construction. The massive recognizable Baroque palace occupying most of the site today was built between 1749 and 1769 on the foundations built in the 14th century by Stephen, Duke of Slavonia.
