Andrássy Avenue is Budapest’s Champs-Élysées, a wide and lavish boulevard showcasing notable architecture, luxury boutiques, and city villas that are mostly used as embassies or galleries nowadays.
The roughly 2-kilometer-long boulevard is lined with buildings of varied architecture and a long stretch of trees along its sides, and connects the two most prominent squares in Budapest – Deák Ferenc tér, the only spot where most metro lines meet, and the magnificent Heroes’ Square.
Andrássy Avenue became a world heritage site in 2002. Despite being a major transport artery of the Hungarian capital, it is very wide with several private ride lanes, making it perfect for a tour that passes between its beautiful imposing mansions and the many urban trees planted close to 80-100 years ago, and onto the last stop at Heroes’ Square.
Budapest’s widest road is mainly located in the VI. district and touches several other central districts along its long path. In addition to having beneath it Europe’s first motorized underground, the boulevard is dotted with exquisite sites and tourist attractions, including the Hungarian State Opera House, Franz Liszt square, House of Terror, the significant St. Stephen’s Basilica, and many more.
Tip – if you are visiting the old Jewish Quarter in Budapest, the avenue connectes to it in several places, all within a few minutes’ walk.
